This editorial is a brief analysis of world migration report and the steps that need to be taken.

• It estimates that international migrant population will swell from 214 million in 2010 to over 400 million in 2050
• The impetus for this is the slower growth in employment opportunities in developed world than in developing world
• This calls for putting in place structures to facilitate sustainable international migration
• These structures are

• Clearly defined migration policies
• Mainstreaming of migration into domestic and international policies

• Remittances have surpassed official development assistance for most of poor countries enabling them to take up developmental activities and lift millions out of poverty
• India’s remittances were the highest at over 49  thousand billion dollars
