This article suggests how India should respond to the evolving situation in Egypt

  • Normally diplomacy is cautious while responding to events in foreign countries
  • Especially when events occur in faraway places, the response is even more delayed as it takes time to get a clearer picture of situation
  • Egypt is at the threshold of a great moment in its history
  • India needs to take the initiative and support the people’s movement in Egypt
  • It is quite clear now, that this movement will end with Mubarak’s ouster or reduced power of the dictator and an empowered citizenry
  • In this context, India needs to earn the goodwill of the Egyptians if it seeks to further its interests in the region

WAY AHEAD

  • Indian government must convey to Egyptians  that we understand their demands for reform and also at same time hope that the government in power will undertake reforms at the earliest
